The team initially developed Command Stick as a scale invariant user interface which could work on smartwatch, mobile and desktop without requiring the re-arrangement of UI elements such as buttons. This would allow a user to learn the controls on one platform and then transfer them onto another. The concept has been continuously refined to improve the ease of use, speed of execution and range of applications.

Command Stick has been specifically designed from the start to enable the use of procedural memory, so that commands can be issued without cognitive load, at great speed. The need for users to be able to create those procedural memories without instruction lead to the development of Command Stick's unique menu system.
